About Us
THE STONY BROOK BLACK STUDENT UNION
The purpose of the Black Student Union (BSU) is to foster an open and enriching environment for Black students on the Stony Brook University Campus. The Black Student Union will educate and inform members and non-members on issues that have previously and are presently affecting the Black community. The Black Student Union aims to increase self-knowledge and understanding of different cultures within the Black community. Lastly, The Black Student Union strives to emphasize the existence and roles of Black students at Stony Brook University.
The Black Student Union, formerly Black Students United, was established on the Stony Brook University campus in 1968 in response to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and attempts by students to organize in order to support Black students on campus. Since then BSU has been in part responsible for the creation of the Africana Studies program, the UNITI Cultural Center, and the increase in admission of Black students. The organization is currently with administration to develop an orientation program to help Black and Latinx students with their transition to the SBU community. The Black Student Union continues to be an organization that provides support, community, and means of activism for Black and Latinx students across the SBU Campus.
